There is another Catholic meme claiming that “the Gregorian Saturday dedicated to Saturn imposed by our Mother Rome,” implying that Sabbath-keeping is pagan or Catholic in origin. This claim fails under both biblical and historical examination. Here is why…
The Bible says that the Sabbath was instituted by God at creation, long before Rome, Catholicism, or any calendar existed. Genesis 2:2-3 says, “And on the seventh day God ended His work… And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.” The Sabbath is not based on a calendar name but on God’s creative act.
The fourth commandment confirms this origin: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy… for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth… and rested the seventh day.” (Exodus 20:8-11) Nothing here points to Rome, Saturn, or paganism but ONLY to the Creator.
The claim that “Saturday” comes from Saturn misunderstands language. All weekday names in English are pagan in origin, like Sun-day and Moon-day, but the Bible never associate worship to the name of a day. See my page “A short history of Calendar change.” God never called the Sabbath “Saturday.” He called it “the seventh day.” Human naming practices do not alter divine law.
The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 A.D., while the Sabbath was observed by God’s people over 3,000 years earlier (see Exodus 16). Rome did not create the Sabbath; rather, history shows Rome attempted to changed it (Daniel 7:25).
Jesus Himself confirmed the permanence of God’s law when He said, “Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law” (Matthew 5:18). The Sabbath stands because God established it, not because of popes, councils, or calendars.
In short:
The seventh-day Sabbath is not pagan. It is not Roman. It is not Gregorian.
It is biblical, creational, and divine.
Truth is truth!
