“We are one, Let’s make it visible?” A Biblical Warning

When the Pope calls for Christian unity just recently and says, We are one, let’s make it visible,” it sounds noble and Christlike. But the Bible warns that not all unity is from God.

Jesus prayed for unity, yes, but unity sanctified by truth, NOT unity created by compromise.

John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

The danger lies in the phrase “make it visible.” Biblical unity is rooted in the heart and obedience to God’s Word, NOT in outward conformity, shared ceremonies, or enforced practices.

Bible prophecy warns us that the final deception will involve visible, global religious unity:

“… and all the world wondered after the beast.” Revelation 13:3

This unity centers on worship and authority. God’s Sabbath is His sign of creation and sanctification (Exodus 20:8-11; Ezekiel 20:12), while Sunday observance rests on church tradition rather than Scripture. When unity forms around Sunday worship, it exalts human authority above God’s command.

Jesus warned us:

“But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Matthew 15:9

What begins as voluntary unity does not remain voluntary. Revelation 13 shows that enforced worship follows, restricting conscience, then coercing obedience.

God’s people are called to unity, but in a different kind:

“Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12

True unity never requires disobedience. Any call for unity that asks God’s people to set aside His law is not heaven-born, no matter how loving it sounds.

No doubt that we are now living in the last days, so safety is not found in being part of a visible religious majority who are Babylon fallen churches, but in standing faithfully on “Thus saith the LORD.”

That being said, who is the center of this ecumenical and false unity?

“Those who will not practice the lessons of Christ, but keep themselves in hand to mold themselves, find in antichrist the center of their union.” Special Testimonies for Ministers and Workers, No. 09; Series A# 9, p 55-56

And who is the center and what is the secret of true unity?

“The secret of unity is found in the equality of believers in Christ. The reason for all division, discord, and difference is found in separation from Christ. Christ is the center to which all should be attracted; for the nearer we approach the center, the closer we shall come together in feeling, in sympathy, in love, growing into the character and image of Jesus. With God there is no respect of persons.” Selected Messages, book 1, p 259

Then, what is our testing message to give?

“We have a testing message to give, and I am instructed to say to our people, “Unify, unify.” But we are not to unify with those who are departing from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. With our hearts sweet and kind and true, we are to go forth to proclaim the message, giving no heed to those who lead away from the truth.”—Manuscript 31, 1906. Selected Messages, Book 3, p 412
