A headline published on September 22, 2026, has brought renewed attention to a statement by Pope Leo XIV: “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them.” That statement was originally made during his Palm Sunday homily earlier this year, when the pope spoke of Jesus as the “King of Peace” and referred to Isaiah 1:15.

At first, this sounds like another religious appeal for peace. And, of course, we certainly should value peace as Christians. But for students of Bible prophecy, there is a deeper question: What does Bible prophecy say about Rome’s use of peace as means of influence?

Daniel 8 describes the little-horn power: “And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand… and by peace shall destroy many.” Daniel 8:25

We should note that Rome’s ability to advance its purposes through policy, diplomacy, craft, and apparently peaceful means. Yes, the prophecy is clear that Rome would destroy many by this so-called “peace.” However, there is a difference between true biblical peace and a political or “religious” peace that becomes a means of advancing another agenda. When Rome speaks with increasing authority about war, peace, diplomacy, morality, and international relations, Bible students have reason to examine those developments in the light of Daniel, for this would be characteristic of the power represented by the little horn.

The apostle Paul gives another remarkable warning: “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them…” 1 Thessalonians 5:3

Did you notice the sequence? “Peace and safety” then “sudden destruction.” Although the immediate context here is about the day of the Lord and the final destruction of the wicked, the passage is striking when placed alongside Daniel 8:25 because Daniel speaks of power that will “by peace” destroy many. While Paul warns us of a time when people will be saying “Peace and safety” immediately before sudden destruction. So, we should pay attention on this matter.

Revelation 13 adds another piece to the picture where the prophetic conflict leads. After the first beast which represents the papal power, Revelation 13:11-12 says, “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast….”

Please note the pronoun “He” is the second beast representing the United States who will exercise the power of Rome and forces the whole world to worship the papacy. This describes a union in which civil power support to the religious power of the papacy.

Revelation 14 reveals that the final issue is ultimately worship and obedience. “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come.” Revelation 14:7

The final controversy is therefore not simply about whether the world will have war or peace. It is about who has authority over worship and conscience. Soon, you and I will have to choose when the final test is given. I beseech you to “choose life” Deuteronomy 30:19.

Do not confuse Christ’s peace with man’s peace. Christ offers genuine peace through reconciliation with God: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1

Human institutions may seek political peace, international stability, diplomatic agreements, or religious unity which may appear desirable. But the Bible warns us not to place our ultimate confidence in human authority as to solve humanity’s deepest spiritual problems. (See Psalm 118:8-9; Jeremiah 17:5; Acts 5:39).

The final answer is not Rome. It is not Washington. It is not the United Nations.

IT IS CHRIST ALONE! Only Christ can reconcile humanity to God, transform the heart, and provide the peace that the world cannot manufacture.

So, when the world says “Peace and Safety,” God’s people must know where true peace is found, and whose voice they must obey. Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” John 14:27

Our confidence must never rest in man but must rest in Jesus Christ and the Word of God.
