On May 4, 2026, President Trump proclaimed the first-ever “National Sabbath” from sundown May 15 (Friday) to nightfall May 16, 2026 (Saturday), calling “all Americans” from all backgrounds to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, observe a day of rest, and celebrate their faith. This marks the first time a US president has formally called for a nationwide Sabbath observance.
“National Sabbath” and “Rededicate 250” are connected events aim to spiritually rededicate the nation through religious observance, prayer, patriotism, and unity. The National Sabbath observance, also known as “Shabbat 250” serves as a prelude to the broader “Rededicate 250” gathering organized by “Freedom 250” in partnership with the White House on May 17 (Sunday), an all-day gathering in Washington, D.C, Together, these events form a three-day religio-political movement uniting faith, patriotism, and government-sponsored religious observance.
Interestingly, while the Shabbat 250 calls on Jewish Americans, and invites all Americans, to observe the Sabbath on Saturday (which is NOT merely a Jewish Tradition, but is the Fourth Commandment of God’s eternal law), the Rededicate 250 calls on all professed Christians, both Catholics and Protestants, to worship on Sunday, honoring both traditions together as part of America’s diverse religious heritage. Please note that the initiative is supported by evangelical leaders and Catholic prelates alike. In other words, while Sabbath observance is highlighted for Jewish Americans, National Sunday worship is likewise being promoted for the Christian majority.
While many view this development as harmless, symbolic, or morally uplifting, students of prophecy should recognize an important trend: increasing government involvement in religious observance.
What direction is America moving?
The Bible points directly to America speaking as a dragon while appearing lamb-like.
Revelation 13:11-12 says, “And he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast…”
Prophecy shows a progression:
- religious influence,
- national unity movements,
- and eventually enforced worship.
History shows that religious laws do not usually appears suddenly. It develops gradually through national crises, moral reform movements, patriotic appeals, and calls for unity and social order.
While this proclamation is not itself a Sunday law, it reveals a growing willingness for government leaders to promote national religious observances, just like Constantine the Great was used by Satan when he instituted the first Sunday law in 321ad to unite his Christian and pagan subjects. Interestingly, Trump was compared to Constantine back in May 2025. Is that a coincidence? Whether intentional or not, students of prophecy see striking parallels in the growing union of religion and civil power.
Remember: the final crisis will center on worship and obedience–God’s commandments versus human tradition.
The Fourth Commandment still declares:
“But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God.” – Exodus 20:10
Yet, prophecy foretold that Papal Rome would “think to change times and laws” (Daniel 7:25). Today, most Protestant churches, including SDA church now, honors Sunday instead of the biblical seventh-day Sabbath.
“Sunday… It is the law of the Catholic Church alone.” – Catholic American Sentinels, June 1893
“Sunday is our mark of authority… the church is above the Bible, and this transference of the Sabbath observance is a proof of that fact.” – Catholic Record of London, Ontario, Sept. 1, 1923
The final issue will be:
- obedience versus tradition,
- God’s authority versus man’s authority,
- truth versus convenience.
America is moving rapidly toward the fulfillment of prophecy.
“The greatest and most favored nation upon the earth is the United States… A fearful record now stands in the register of Heaven against our land; but the crime which shall fill up the measure of her iniquity is that of making void the law of God. { 4SP 398.1 }
“Between the laws of men and the precepts of Jehovah will come the last great conflict of the controversy between truth and error. Upon this battle we are now entering,—a battle not between rival churches contending for the supremacy, but between the religion of the Bible and the religion of fable and tradition. The agencies which will unite against truth and righteousness in this contest are now actively at work.” { 4SP 398.2 }
Today America increasingly promotes:
- national prayer observances,
- ecumenical unity movements,
- government recognition of religious traditions,
- moral legislation supported by churches,
- and calls for national repentance and sacred rest during times of crisis.
A presidential proclamation of “National Sabbath” may appear symbolic today, but prophecy students believe these developments are preparing the way for future National Sunday Laws.
Revelation describes God’s faithful remnant this way:
“Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” – Revelation 14:12
As religious and political powers continue to unite, now is the time to study your Bible diligently, understand prophecy, and stand firmly upon the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
