HALLOWEEN: A Pagan Tradition Christians Should Avoid

Can a Christian honor God while participating in a celebration that glorifies darkness, death, witchcraft, and the occult?

Halloween is often presented as harmless fun, costumes, and candy. Yet its historical associations with pagan customs, spirits, and the supernatural raise serious questions for those who desire to follow the Word of God. Christians must not blindly embrace the traditions of this world without examining them in the light of Scripture.

God’s Word gives us a clear warning:

Ephesians 5:11 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 warns against practices associated with witchcraft, divination, and communication with familiar spirits. God does not want His people to participate in occult practices or treat them as entertainment.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 commands us to “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Romans 12:2 reminds us, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

The issue is not simply whether someone intends to do evil. The deeper question is whether our choices honor God, uphold His truth, and lead others toward righteousness.

Christians are called to be the light of the world, not participants in the works of darkness. We should not excuse questionable traditions merely because society has made them popular or because they are presented as harmless fun. Instead, we must carefully examine their meaning and consider the influence they have on our children, our families, and our witness for Christ.

1 Peter 1:15-16 calls God’s people to be holy in all manner of conversation, because He who has called us is holy.

Let us therefore choose what glorifies our Saviour. Rather than celebrating Halloween, let us teach our children the principles of Scripture, fill our homes with things that are pure and wholesome, and use this season as an opportunity to point others to the light of Jesus Christ.

Dear Christian friend, do not follow a tradition simply because the world accepts it. Test everything by the Word of God. Stand for truth even when it is unpopular, and lovingly warn others about practices that conflict with Scripture.

Joshua 24:15 “Choose you this day whom ye will serve; … but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Choose Christ over the traditions of the world. Walk in the light, reject the works of darkness, and let your life be a faithful witness for your Saviour.

Truth is truth!
